California Redwood Series
Hand-crafted from select redwood, the California Redwood Series stands as the quality playset choice for your family. Designed for the California backyard, our modular play structure designs offer a wide variety of sizes, configurations and exciting activities to suit all types of children. The patented steel flange joint system provides superior strength and stability. Safety features include: fastener-free deck and rock climbing wall surfaces; steel reinforcing straps on swingsets; well-defined entry and exit points; railings across all openings; rounded board edges; flat steps with handrails.
Premium Redwood Plus the Strength of Steel
Redwood is an ideal lumber for backyard play sets not only because of its natural beauty, but also because redwood has a reputation for being naturally resistant to and the elements, including insects, moisture, and the sun.
The lumber in the California Redwood Series is 100% REDWOOD FROM MANAGED FORESTS. As your California Redwood Series product lasts over the years, the wood will age beautifully and behave in a more uniform manner than what would be expected from a mixture of woods.
All boards up through the 2x6 size are kiln dried to minimize the possibility of bowing, warping and cracking. To avoid cellular breakdown and loss of strength, Play-Well does not kiln dry larger 4x4 and 4x6 boards. These larger boards of air dried for several months in a coastal climate to allow unwanted moisture to exit the boards slowly. Our PROPERLY CONDUCTED DRYING PROCESS adds time to the overall production process, but like many of the finer things in life, it is well worth the wait for this premium quality lumber. Because PLAY-WELL DOES NOT RUSH this process, please be aware that on occasion, it may take longer to for your playset to be delivered.
Play-Well Patented Flange Joint System
The patented Play-Well flange joint system (Patent No. D526,558 and patent pending) utilizes HEAVY GUAGE STEEL to join the structural members of the swing set and fort together.
Unlike any other steel joint system, the integrated Play-Well flange system is engineered to provide not only VERTICAL STRENGTH, but also HORIZONTAL STABILITY. Heavy 1/2 inch bolts hold the steel brackets that wrap around the beam. INTEGRATED GUSSETS and unique GRIPPING TEETH oppose movement and help keep your play set more STABLE.
Over the years as the play set ages, your Play-Well California Redwood Series play set will REMAIN SOLID because nearly 100 square inches of the steel flange surface hold the structural members securely, as compared to roughly 1 square inch offered by the commonly used bolt and washer design. A bolt and washer design can dig into the lumber over time, ultimately resulting in a wobbly play structure. Wobbliness is the number one concern we hear from buyers of lower-grade products.
Ribbed Steel Reinforcing Straps
Play-Well's ribbed steel strap provides additional rigidity to swing set and extension arms beams by allowing the steel to carry some of the weight. In the early morning hours of December 1, 2011 a severe windstrom toppled a record-setting number of trees in the Pasadena area. Our steel-reinforced swing sets prevented several multi-ton trees from reaching the ground.
Powder Coated Steel
Our steel components including ladder hand rails, monkey bar rungs, fire poles, swing chain, flanges, brackets, and elliptical hand grips, are powder coated with a durable forest green finish. Unlike vinyl dipped rungs, powder coated steel will not absorb dirt, become sticky, gouge easily, or crack.
The curve of the Play-Well oval® has been designed into many of the California Redwood Series steel and wood components. Be sure to look for it as well as the Play-Well brand to make sure a play set is a Play-Well product.
